Peter Coward

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing away of our founding director, Peter Coward, who died on Saturday 09 June 2018. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all of his work colleagues.

Peter had recently been admitted to a West Sussex Hospice, after battling cancer since the start of the year. He had earlier stepped back from the day-to-day engagement within the business, to undergo treatments at both Brighton and Royal Marsden Hospital.

Paul Smart, Peter’s business partner said “Peter’s passing is such a tragic loss, at no age, for a beloved friend and colleague. He will be greatly missed; all of our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. His legacy of expertise and his gentle approach to people will live on through the Company he founded.”

Peter graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in civil engineering. After a short spell writing software to map the sea bed he set up Compatibility Ltd in 1985, with his then business partner Sue Piggott. Compatibility engaged in importing PCs from the far-east, at what was the very start of personal computing and the office PC revolution. After Sue left the business in 1994 Peter teamed up with current Managing Director Paul Smart in 1996. With Paul running the business, Peter could concentrate on the clients and the technology. The pair have grown the business steadily to today, where Compatibility has become one of the leading providers of IT services in London and the South-East.

Peter had effectively retired earlier in the year, to concentrate on his treatment; Paul commented at the time “Peter is a stalwart in the office and will be sorely missed by colleagues and clients alike. His considered, calm but informed explanations formed the basis of some of the many long-term relationships which continue to be at the heart of the business. After working with him on all aspects of the business for some 22yrs, I will deeply miss his help and advice”.

Peter said that while he would not miss coming into the office every day, he intended to keep in touch with everyone and that he would miss the interaction with the team and the clients, but that he was very much looking forward to spending more time with his partner Annie. Peter did spend more time with Annie, who nursed him through thick and thin.

Peter’s wish was to have his ashes cast over the South Downs; an area that he walked so often and loved so much.

The family, through Arka Funerals, have set up a Just Giving page for anyone wishing to make donations, with the proceeds going to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
